Shaping up in '07

After putting in thousands of hours of one-on-one client training in my career, I can tell you that the failed New Year's resolution is probably the one thing that has kept me the busiest. People start off with the best of intentions but drop out before springtime.

The problem is that people set goals that are too unrealistic. They want dramatic results -- and they want them NOW.

But your chances of success are much greater if you create smaller goals that are more achievable in the short-term and that will ultimately get you to your big goal.

For example, if your big goal is to lose 20 pounds as soon as possible, your first, smaller goal could be committing to walking four days a week. Then after three weeks of this, increase your exercise to five days of walking and two days of strength-training.

Before you know it, you have gotten yourself into the habit of living a healthier lifestyle -- and that is key.

To help keep yourself motivated, track your progress. You might chart your weight, how much further you walk each month or how many more push-ups you can do over time.

If you hit a road block, consider hiring a personal trainer for one or two sessions to help you get your exercise plan back on track and to motivate you. Keep in mind that you may need to periodically reassess your goals so that they're challenging but still doable.
