Shape up like Spider-Man

By Gregory Joujon-Roche

We all love Spider-Man because, as superheroes go, we can relate to him. Sure, he’s got that special Spidey sense, yet he’s not the size of a brick building and he doesn’t eat villains for lunch.

He’s a little more like the rest of us mere mortals -- and he has many of the fitness qualities we aspire to: strength, speed and agility.

Well, with the superhero workout below, you can shape up like Spider-Man, too. But these three activities aren’t for the weak. If you’re a beginner, start slowly and work your way up to this challenge.

*Peter Parker push-ups:

Start on the floor in traditional push-up position. Keep your abs braced and your body in a straight line, parallel to the floor. Slowly lower yourself down, and as you do, bring your right knee toward your right elbow. Try to rotate your knee so it is outside your elbow, keeping your foot off the ground. Hold for 5 seconds, pushing through your chest, shoulders and triceps, and then return to the starting position. Aim for 5 to 10 push-ups per side.

*Superhero side planks:

Side planks will help build your core strength, which is important for balance and dexterity. Start by lying on the floor on your left side. Then lift up on your left elbow so that your hips are off the floor and your entire body is in a straight line. Hold for one minute and then repeat on the right side. That’s one set. Aim to do three sets on each side.

*Spidey sprints:

To do your best Spidey imitation, you need to be built for speed. Get outdoors for this one. The goal is to do 10, 100-yard sprints. Be sure to warm-up first with some jogging and half-paced practice sprints, then pick up the pace. Sprint as hard as you can -- go, go, go, go, go! Record your times and see how you improve each week. At the end of each sprinting session, take a little walk to keep things loose and then get in some nice stretches.

Do these activities three days a week and feel your transformation!

Gloria:
Check it out.... Spider man abs.
Why would I want the body of Toby? He looks like a skinny 12 year old boy. I'm a man, why would I want to look like that? People, get over your worshipping of "stars" and get your own life. Everyone is always trying to be like someone famous but yet, they are no better than you....they are just severely over paid.
LMAO
Toby isn't typical tall white man, but he looks fit enough for his size just like the spiderman in comic.
You can buff up more like those actors in movie "300" but their regular exercise is more bodybuilding type exercise with loads of weight lifting.  I don't know about you Aaron, you can be one of the 80% overweight people in America's population.  Point is, it's better to start getting in shape and be healthy than have all kinds of health problems as you get older.  It would be nice if we have superhero like Spiderman. ^_^
Aaron,

Bruce Lee looked like a little guy too but he was one of the toughest guys ever.  Fast and incredibly strong, a very effiecient machine.  Not like the overgrown weightlifters I see at the gym.

Peace,
I like this suggestion.  It's good to see these kinda work outs, especially ones that emphasize core strength.  Core strength is good for the Parker type who might have to spend some portion of his day sitting at his desk, as well as serve to avoid or help beat back problems!  The only thing missing here is an emphasis on cardio other than that you've got a work out full of sustenance!
I also like the suggestion. There is too much steroid/supplement body building workouts nowdays and not enough cardio/core strength workouts. Also, 100 yds is a long sprint!
I am reasonably fit for my age (50's). I wouldn't want to go out with a woman who had more muscle bulk than I do.
I like the sound of this routine. Efficient and not too time consuming. I'm more up for it than what my current occupation requires.
It will take a lot more than some push-ups, planks, and sprints to get into Spidey strength
The exercises suggested in this article are fairly simple and great for maintaining healthy body weight. There are way too many obese US citizens that need to look in the mirror and truly admit they need these exercises. I'm 47 and I proudly display a fit body like Toby McQuire. Hooaah!!
I grew up reading Spider-Man - among fictional characters, he's always been my "hero".  I workout regularly, and though I've tried many times over the years to "bulk up", I just can't seem to add the required muscle mass without resorting to protein shakes (yuck!) or, worse, steroids - and I hope I'm never THAT desperate.  At my best, I got down to 7% body fat and was a tight, lean lookin' little Spider-dude (5'8", 150 lbs).  And that's cool - I'd rather be Spidey than Super any day.
Crappy workout. It wont get you very far at all. If you want to be strong, quick, powerful, get an olympic bar set ($100-150) and get trained in olympic lifting. You will get a far, FAR stronger core, greater balance, and dexterity doing olympic lifts than anything else.

Bulking up requires eating more calories than your body burns and adequate protein (0.6-1g/lb of body mass), which is not hard at all. You dont need protein shakes (some are quite tasty) or supplements to do this. Steroids wont make you magically gain weight. It requires a positive energy balance to gain weight, period. Even with steriods you have to know what you are doing to get anywhere with it.

For those that think you have to get super muscley, fat, and/or big to be quick and strong take a look at this vid:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jr1FuaoDco

Yes, he is an elite athlete, but he only weighs 205 and certainly doesnt look huge. This video shows him snatching (ground to overhead) ~360lbs (160kg), clean&pressing (ground to shoulders to overhead) ~400lbs (180kg), and full squating (not your typically commercial gym 1/2 or 1/4 squat)580lbs (260kg).

The olympics are the absolute tightest competition for drug testing, so there is no extra steroid strength here.

Look into the workout that Bruce Lee did. There was a lot of weight lifting involved in his training. Weight lifting doesnt necessarily make you big... you gotta eat big to get big.
Why is there no print-friendly versions of Fit List blog entries?  Some of the content on MSNBC is fabulous, but the backwardness of the site setup is breathtaking.
Have you guys seen Toby without a shirt? He's pretty big.  I don't know why anyone would think he's skinny.
TOBEY MAGUIRE - SPIDERMAN - VEGETARIAN
CHRISTIAN BALE - BATMAN - VEGETARIAN
CHRIS EVANS - FANTASTIC 4 HUMAN TORCH - VEGETARIAN
ALICIA SYLVASTONE - BATGIRL - VEGETARIAN

NEED I SAY MORE!!
Alicia Silverstone was chunky in Batman and Robin.
It's a lot easier to maintain or lose weight following a low fat vegan diet. A vegan diet is just healthier. Also, too many people think that more protein is healthier. Excess protein is not stored by the body, it is excreted by your kidneys, along with the calcium leached from your bones.
Yea and if your kids are vegan also they just might die like the little baby starved on a vegan diet.
Toby and Chris are twigs. You might want to look into what Christian did to get his decent Batman physique.

One could jsut as well say the Atkins Diet (which I do not advocate. It is flawed in the same way as the vegan diet.) makes it a lot easier to maintain or lose weight. The vegan diet is garbage. It lacks many nutrients that are vital for health... one of them being calcium. As such, it is no where near as healthy as a well balanced diet.

The pH crap that is constantly spewed by vegetarians has been shown time and time again in studies to have no significant effect on health. Non-vegetarians do not need to worry about calcium leech anyway because they get plenty in their diets. Adequate vegetable and fruit intake would counteract this "acidity" anyway.

Excess protein is deaminated then burned for energy or stored as glycogen. The amines are excreted via urine (processesed by the kidneys). The only studies that show excessive protein (2+g/lb body weight) damages the kidneys is when the subjects already have significant kidney problems. I am not aware of any study done with healthy subjects in which there is any evidence excessive protein has caused kidney problems.
Aaron: You wouldnt be complaining if you were getting paid like them.

Bryan: You are ignorant to think vegetarian/vegan diets are flawed. Any intelligent person, meat eater or not, will tell you it all depends on what you eat. Like anything, it can be flawed if done incorrectly.
hi i think the planks, push ups, etc work but the stress thease superstars put on there body isnt good bale lost so much in the machinst an then piled muscle on for batman surely thats bad for you i remember brad pitt lost loads of wait for that seven years in tibet film i think its dangrous for your body
Tobey,Christian,Chris,Alicia Silverstone (How laughable) These guys have nothing on Jean-Claude Van Damme.....back in the day of course!
I agree with Brian. You HAVE to lift weights to get results you will be happy with. I ALSO include stretching, aerobics, diet/nutrition, and balance in my exercises. I am 55 years old. 6'2" tall. Wear an XXL shirt, 283 pounds. Feel like I am age 40.
I dont see why anybody is wasting time saying that this is not a even decent workout. (not that everone belives that.) It isn't made to sculpt you into the hulk, its made to improve your strength, speed, and focus on your core. Thats it. No one is saying that it will give you actual spider-man speed, ability to cling to walls and shoot webs, and a spider sense. So the people who wasted their time writing a senseless messege should just keep whatever opinion to themselves. I'll admit i'm not in olympic shape, but i can look at myself in a mirror and be very happy with my body. Trust me, if you try it, this workout will give you results, GOOD results, not GREAT results, Good results.
Sorry but theres no way you'd look like Spidey with these three silly little excersizes.

You've got to lift and lift big to get that type of muscle definition.
"Excess protein is not stored by the body, it is excreted by your kidneys."

That's not true.  Excess protein is processed and stored as fat.
Mark, thankfully for kickass women like me there are men more secure than you.

and to all you hardcore weight lifters (myself included) not everyone wants to look like Jean-Claude. this is a great workout for functional fitness.
Seems to me that no matter how you slice it, it alwasy comes down to diet. What you eat and when you eat it.
The studies show that people on a diet almost always put the weight back on. This blog gives you great solution to turn eating into  a healthy habit. No dieting required.
Optimum physical fitness includes cardio vascular conditioning, strength training and flexibility...I can't say much about vegans...I like red meat too much...but I'd suggest look for the leanest cuts of steak and 98% lean ground beef.
Lol i wanna look like VENOM/EDDIE BROCK GRRRRR .in other words "david dickinson" ur just a fat steroid pumped bastard like the rest of america. no one gives a shit how much u weigh or how tall u r. are we meant to be impressed?  ur just jealous coz im on my way to looking like van damme.haha
Hmmm I wanna meet that van damme girl, who works out lol.as long as she doesnt look like schwarzenegger or something.(shudders)
I am a big fan of all your movies I like you a lot
tobey Maguire. It's soo sad when Harry dies. Keep up
the good work.

Siged Your bigest fan
                    Vincent Strudl
I don't know why everyone is saying that you can't get into "spidey" shape with these three workouts alone.  You can, i'm living proof of that.  Cut out the soda and eat healthy, then just do these workouts and you will get in that shape. Unless, of course, you lack dicipline.  I to, did not see any change, but kept up with it and after about six months, i am in peak shape.  It only takes dedication.
