Keep the kids moving in the lazy days of summer

Summer is the time for fun in the sun, popsicles, lemonade, sleeping in and hanging out. But overdoing it in the R&R department can add some extra pounds – and make for some bored, crabby kids.

But all moms, dads, grandparents or other caretakers need to keep kids fit and happy is a game plan. Here’s what I suggest.

Set up a summer activity chart. Have your kids choose from fun activities, such as:

    1. Washing the car.
    2. Playing Frisbee tag with a sibling.
    3. Jumping on a trampoline.
    4. Giving the dog a bath.
    5. Roller skating.
    6. Taking a family walk.
    7. Hunting for treasure in the backyard.
    8. Flying a kite.
    9. Playing freeze tag.
    10. Tie-dyeing sheets and make a tent.
    11. Planting a garden in a pot.
    12. Playing hopscotch.
    13. Jumping rope.
    14. Playing dress up.
    15. Riding a bike.

Establish routine, just like you do when school’s in session. For instance, choose a wakeup time that everyone in the house agrees upon. (It doesn’t have to be quite as early as regular school hours, though.) Then give your kids two healthy breakfast choices. This way they get to pick, but you know either way they are getting a healthy breakfast. For my kids I have a plate of fresh fruit ready on the table so they grab that first.

During breakfast, decide on the activity of the day. Families with more than one child can choose as a group each day.

Following breakfast, the activities begin!

By the end of the summer, you will have fit and happy kids.

How about some actual fitness tips?
The other day I wrote about how fitness is a good career move. (I am the author of a career book and an IT focused career blog)..

Mostly commenting on the energy and mental benefits.  However, the bi-product of me exercising at home, during the day, in the time provided is that both my daughters and my 13 year old son are all doing push-ups - with amazing results.

The fact is, the single greatest way to keep your kids active is to be active with them.  Too many parents I know are trying to send their kids off to exercise, instead of having their kids join them.
"Fun" activities like washing the car and the dog, and playing frisbee with you sister?  Just don't let them get too out of control
As the world wide web continues to add male dog names guidance, we will try to bring them to you.
