You make time for what you really want to do. Like the article said...excercise is cumulative so I get up half an hour early and do a 20 minute, 1 mile in home walk which I also do at lunch. In the evening after I get home from my second job, I do a 30 minute, 2 mile in home walk. I have added hand weights so I can get some upper body in while I'm walking and manage to do some ab work as well. I take the dog for a quick 20 minute walk between jobs and on the weekends. Unfortunately, we have learned that human physiology dictates that you must get that heart rate up for a certain period of time. If you don't devote that amount of time, then no "tip" will work. Our bodies were designed, and evolved, to be physically active. I now get up at 5:00 a.m. everyday and go to the gym. Yes I'm lucky to have a gym where I work. But I used to LOVE to sleep. Now I love fitting into my cloths and getting compliments about the 30 lbs. I've lost this year. It's all about saying I will do it instead of how can I do it.

Getting a buff beach belly

I have to say I agree with most of what has been said here. "No time" is just an excuse. I was in fitness magazine shape up until the last 5 years. I always found time to work out - even if that meant pushups in the subway station (I always brought disposable gloves), crunches in my office, calf raises wherever. And I walked or biked whenever possible. Now I'm 50 years old, overweight and out of shape and still trying to convince myself it's not my fault as I have "no time" to get in shape.

Getting a buff beach belly

M. The way I see it, if one diet/excercise routine worked for everyone, no one would be dieting. What I have found is that there are three keys to losing weight - moderation, honesty, and awareness.

I think what most people are addressing on this board in regard to Ms. T is honesty (is she honest that she can't find time to work out?), but actually, being a mother of so many children, I don't doubt it's quite difficult for her to find time to excercise. At the same time, I don't think it is impossible for her to find a few minutes in the day for it.

The bottom line is that if you are semi educated, and honest with yourself, you likely know the things in your lifestyle that could use improvement and will cause you to lose weight. The thing is, if you make just minor daily lifestyle changes (like eating a well balanced meal for lunch instead of a daily chicken parm hero;), you would be surprised at how this minor change will impact not only the scale, but potentially serve as the basis to improving your whole lifestyle over time.

Just how you go about this is different for everyone. I find it annoying that you always read articles and books telling you you MUST NOT excercise less than 5 times a week, or you MUST NOT eat certain foods. Call me rebellious, but I hate to be told what to do or restricted to anything. (I realize, however, that for some people, this is doable and works - but not for me!). So instead, I focus on finding things in my lifestyle I CAN modify slightly and find reasonable to stick to. The thing is, for everyone, the things they CAN modify slightly in their life are different. And this is the real reason why if you are willing to be honest with yourself, there still will never be one universal bible on staying fit or losing weight.

In other words, you just have to find what works for you.

I'm not a fitness trainer or a diet guru or a nutritionist, I'm just someone who is reasonably educated, has tried to lose weight/become more fit and has faced all of the obstacles/issues I think people typically face, but meanwhile are never individually and explicity addressed in books.

If you are serious and would like some help/advice on how to make doable modifications in your diet/lifestyle/excercise (free of charge:) email me at goodliving200@yahoo.com and I will offer you some suggestions.

Getting a buff beach belly

So Ms. Timeless is busy. Well guess what? We all are busy but there really is no excuse to not exercise if you really want it. I made the commitment to get up at 5:00am every morning so I could get my butt out the door and to the gym, which incidently is the only time I really have due to work and family commitments the rest of the day. I cycle to the train station (approx 25 mins. away) to get that first train into downtown, hit the gym at 6:30am and get to work by 9:00am. My work out is over and done and it starts your day off on the right foot. We all get busy as the day progresses so its easy to get caught up with the demands of work and home and then say, I'm too busy/tired to work out. Well, if you want it bad enough, you can find the time. Many commented that they get up early in the morning to work out. Maybe that is what Ms. Timeless needs to do! You don't need 45 to 60 mins. to reap the benefits. Even 20-30 minutes 3 times a week will do the trick. If you want it bad enough, you can find the time. The cardio 40 minutes a day five days a week plus strength training three times a week was to get a buff beach belly. If you don't want a buff beach belly but just want to get healthier, start with smaller steps;ANYTHING is better than nothing. Get up 10 minutes early and walk up and down your street, block, etc. Park in the parking spot the farthest from your building, store or mall; take the stairs instead of the escalator, etc., etc. Every little bit helps! Drink one less soda/sugar drink a day. I guarantee you once those endorphins kick in you will want to find minutes to excercise and not make more excuses not to.

Getting a buff beach belly

For me, the easiest way to lose weight was just keeping track of food you eat. Look around, there are sites that will help. You can't lose weight if your diet isn't right. I lost 40 pounds doing little to no extra exercise over what I had previously been doing. Watching what I ate made all the difference. I didn’t start exercising until I was almost in shape.

Getting a buff beach belly

One trick to save time with cardio that I didn't see mentioned here is to use interval training instead of the typical steady state methods promoted here. It has been shown to be more effective for fat loss and your body continues to burn more calories later. I do 3- 20 minute session in the morning and it got me pretty shreaded. Essentially you warm up at a slow pace for 5 minutes and then alternate between sprints and a moderate pace till the 18th minutes, cool down for the last two. I also do three sessions of circuit training w/ weights after work on alternate days. More info is all over the web for interval techniques. Its about priorities. I also have a full time job and work part time 4-5 nights a week. think I want to spend my night off working out, not really. I'd like to have a social life. but whats the point of being able to go out if I look like a slob. therefore, heres some pointers for people who "don't have time" first, I work in an office building downtown, I frequently take the stairs - 16 flights - I can do that three times a day if i really want to. Take a walk on your lunch hour, to someplace other than McDonalds.
Also, if you are too tired to work out, thats a pretty good indication that you need to work out. At night, after I make dinner - I put in some kind of cardio (aerobics, walking, tae bo) and then I do some strength training, if someone asks me to do something or help them - I tell them to wait until I am done exercising and to tell you the truth - it feels pretty good to do something for myself after 10 or so years. I will tell you this though, people and family members can be inherently selfish when they think they have ownership on your time whether you are their mother or their wife/husband. In the end it is benefitting them as much as you because you are healthier, have more energy and will live longer. I'm saying be a little selfish with you time and do something good for yourself. Good Luck

Getting a buff beach belly

Thank goodness I kept my part-time job of a fitness instructor when I went full time elsewhere. Going through a divorce with 3 children and then being diagnosed with cancer in the same year would have more than hampered my excercise regiment. I can understand wanting to spend more time with the kids and all the things that need to be done, really. However, you CAN do it. I started out with getting up an hour earlier than the kids and hitting the gym (when i was still married) and then after that, I went to the gym RIGHT after work-before getting them. As for the 20 hour days, I am POSITIVE, they don't happen every single day, otherwise you would be non-functional. For everbody else, I am a 160 lbs, 5'6'' and work out with a personal trainer three times a week (quite intensely), play tennis at least twice a week and run at least four days (I ran the Houston marathon last year) but I cannot seem to be able to lose 20lbs. Yes, you DO have full, busy days. We get that. Find innovative ways to work out while you're doing other things. Even if it's just running in place for 15 minutes at a t-ball game. Get ankle or wrist weights to use (if possible) when walking around work or WHEREVER to at least help put a little strain on you. Get a pedometer and at least try to make a commitment to walk so many steps/miles per week or day. EVERYONE can find a little bit of time. Regardless of how busy you are. What's better? Having that extra 20-30 minutes of time a day to watch TV or nosh out on ice-cream? Or living a healthy lifestyle that will help you live longer and help prevent any kids you might have from being overweight and obese as well. So I agree with other posters - NO MORE EXCUSES (and I'm trying to begin applying it to myself as well).

Health should be more important to us all.

Getting a buff beach belly

Ms.Timeless

If you are married, your husband needs to get off his butt and put the kids to sleep and assist in doing some dishes. If for some unfortunate reason you are unmarried you need to start delegating some responsibilites to the older children (if they are of age.)If your oldest is going to bed at 10pm what is to stop you from exercising while he/she was watching TV or exercising during homework time. Buy an exercise bike put it right in front of the TV and pedal away. I find scheduling household duties around my 1/2 hour per day of exercising as opposed to the other way around really makes it seem less painful. There really are no excuses for not exercising.

Getting a buff beach belly

Congratulations to everyone who has lost weight! Any advice on strenght training exercizes that don't require a gym membership, or special equiptment?

Getting a buff beach belly

Quit complaining about time. Try explaining to your wife and 3 kids you are 38 and on your way to the er for a stroke at 392 lbs. I have lost 192 lbs and my wife has lost 105 lbs. We decided to make time or our kids would have no time with us. It also sets an example for them. Now instead of watching tv always they lift weights and walk on our treadmill. My 3 year old even does aerobics at home with my wife. Every evening he now asks what are doing after the gym. The eating habits will improve also. I always joke to everybody I have to have the only 3 sons that prefer grilled salmon and boiled shrimp with steamed brocolli to hamburgers. They would not touch a hot dog now either. Do it for yourself and everyone reaps the rewards.

Getting a buff beach belly

get a resistance tube for less than $20 and use it for a LOT of major muscle groups. Every 2 - 3 hours eat something healthy, a turkey burger, grilled chicken slices, Yougurt, whole wheat wrap with Turkey, whole wheat pretzels, fruits etc...but always have food near you. It will keep the furnace running all day and you will burn the calories efficiently. Also, add a little more "good" fat into your diet like Natural PB (not too much PB though, it is good for you but not in large quantities), olive oil, etc... The body does need fat to burn fat.
Getting a buff beach belly

If there's a will, there's a way. I watch NO TV other than the weather and an occasional hockey or football game. Find time. I run 4 miles during my daughter's soccer practices twice a week. I know it's frustrating. How old are your kids? I take my daughter with me (she's 9) when I run - she rides her bike. She loves the adventure of the whole thing! Her brothers USED to go with me before they became teenagers... they were riding 4-6 miles 3-4 days a week when they were 5 and 6. It sets a great precedent for them - staying fit is second nature to all of them. She likes going to the gym, too. Try to find 10 minutes a day for YOU. Walk around the block, do a couple yoga poses, stretch, do a few easy exercises or whatever helps you get back in touch with yourself physically. It really helps - even just a little slice of time like that. You deserve to take care of you, and it helps you take care of everyone else even better than before.

Getting a buff beach belly

AHH ITS FUNNY SOME PEOPLE SAY WE SIT IN FRONT OF TV FOR 3 HOURS. tHATS BECAUSE WE WORK ALL WEEK. wE NEED TO RELAX. aND FOR THE GUY WHO OPERATES HIS OWN BUS. yOU CAN TAKE TIME OUT ANYTIME. iTS YOUR BUSINESS.

Getting a buff beach belly

For those who are too busy, life is to hectic, kids and other activities take up all your time, chances are, you don't need a 380 hour work out a week. With all that activity, I doubt you're seriously over weight. This work out is intended for the seriously out of shape person who wants abs of steel. Secondly, you would need to get down to 4% body fat to display your six packs. That's impossible for most people. For those who are pushing 50, you better find the time to work out regardless. Chances are you'll never have six pack abs but you'll live longer.

Getting a buff beach belly

I am so sick of all the excuses people have. That is why our society is so sick, obese, depressed and full of anxiety .....b/c we don't use our bodies and mind as intended. For all you moms who "whiz their kids off to soccer practice and swimming then get home and are so tired etc. etc......" stop using your homelife as an excuse. I am a family counselour and see so many parents who use their children's "activities" to do none of their own. I'm a 50 year old woman and I'm in better shape than I've ever been in my life. I wasn't overweight as a teen but I struggled with each passing year. I've been working out with more commitment than ever for the past 4 years and eating healthier so that I can avoid as many of the age related problems that we'll all face someday. All it takes is commitment. Here's the reason I work out almost every day of the week. WEIGHT TRAINING AND CARDIO ARE THE MEDICATIONS THAT I MUST DO, PHYSICALLY, FOR MY HEALTH. It's that simple. I can't take a pill, drink a smoothie or substitute ANYTHING for the physical activity called exercise. Everyone must reach deep within and find the motivation to reach for their physical best. Once you start feeling better and looking better, you'll gain the confidence and even more motivation to keep working harder and harder to reach and then maintain your healthy body. The only thing that works, is hard work.

Getting a buff beach belly

KRYSTAL

DONT TALK ABOUT MEN BEING USELESS. When it comes to weight loss, you.re either committed to making life changes, and that includes changing your eating habits PERMANENTLY and incorporating SOME form of exercise in your DAILY routine, or you.re not. Its that simple.

10 years ago, when I was 22 and a size 14 going on 16, I decided to change my life and I lost 40 pounds all by myself without the advice of doctors or dieticians and without paying a dime to a weight loss clinic. I simply CUT my portions (severely) and made exercise a priority. It took 6 months to lose that weight.

That was then, and I.m still a size 4 today (size 2 in the summer months) but I sweat my rear off 5 days a week in the gym for 2 hours AND continue monitoring my food intake and portions. Its tough, but worth the price, as nothing tastes as good as being thin feels.

THAT.S what it takes to lose weight AND KEEP IT OFF!

Getting a buff beach belly

I turned 50 on May 20th. The program I found to be the most helpful was Weight Watchers' Flex program because you can eat whatever you want, but you have to keep track of how much you eat, which is key. I was still able to splurge on pizza or whatever, I just had to keep track of how much I ate. You really start to notice what you eat when you're keeping track so rigidly. You can also try eating smaller meals 5-6 times a day - that way you always feel full and you're not tempted to eat bigger meals 3 times a day, thereby increasing your calories. You also probably want to step up the intensity of whatever exercise you are doing. Just remember that you have to burn more calories than you eat to lose weight, and 3,500 cals = 1 pound of fat! Starving yourself isn't the option, nor is going totally low-fat, because like someone else said you need fat to burn fat. Keep a food diary for a week; you'll probably be surprised at how much you eat/drink that you really don't need. Try cutting out sodas and sugary drinks, too. The body metabolizes liquid calories differently. Water and 100% juices (in moderation, even they have sugar) are really all you need. Good luck!

Getting a buff beach belly

I understand the excuses and the desire to sleep instead of work out. I also work at an investment bank, although I'm not a banker so my hours are more reasonable. I also go to graduate school full time. I have friends who work, go to school, and have multiple children. My sister is a internal medicine resident at one of the most competitive residencies in the country. She works 85 hours a week. We all manage to find time to work out.

I think the most important think is to remember that one size does not fit all, in terms of creating a healthy lifestyle. For me, I have a gym membership, I control my portions when I eat, I incorporate lots of fruits and veggies in my diet, and I walk as much as possible. This works for me because a) I live near a gym that is in my price range, b) I'm frugal, so taking half my dinner home from a restaurant helps my health and my wallet, c) There are tons of farmers' markets around me so I can eat good food, d) I live in a city with a beautiful lakefront walking path.

When trying to get healthy, you have to really take a look at your lifestyle, determine what needs to change and what needs to stay the same. Then incorporate exercise and healthier eating where you can. Maybe that means buying exercise equipment to use at home. Maybe that means cutting out fast food. Maybe you should get rid of your TV. Maybe you should invest in a running stroller. Who knows? But you have to find some way to stay within your ideal weight, and physical activity and eating right are the only ways to do it.

Furthermore, I'd just like to add that no investment banker works 20+ hours EVERY day. That is an occasional thing that one must do in this business. Long hours are a fact of life, but my bankers, on average, work around 75-80 hrs per week and they still manage to work out. I've seen them doing stair runs in our office. Some of them moved to be within walking distance of work. They do pushups and crunches on the weekends at their cubicles while they're waiting for presentations to print. No offense, but if you are working 20+ hrs every day - first of all, you'll be dead before you get that bonus, and secondly, you're probably not very efficient. Don't push your health aside for money. You might be able to retire at 35, but you'll have the body of a 50 year old. Do what you need to do to be healthy.

Getting a buff beach belly

you have to make time. i have an extremely busy schedule. on the go early in the morning until very late at night. i also have a toddler. my workout schedule seemed to have fallen off my schedule. my excuse was being too tired and too busy. after letting myself go quite a bit in the last year. i have finally realize i have to do something. if 40 minutes is all it is needed to do the above, than im sure you could get up just a little bit earlier or go to bed just a little bit later. you do this, you start getting back in shape, you start getting more energy and then you probably find yourself working out more.

Getting a buff beach belly

David H.,
I would suggest that you check out a free web-site that's helped me. fitday.com is a free site where you can log in all of your food and exercise after you set up the home page with your basic information. It's helped me to go from a 12 to a 4 which I know for a guy doesn't mean much. The point is, the site shows you a pie chart (sorry about the pie reference) with all the calories divided into fat, carbs and protein. I've learned alot about my eating habits from using this and I've done it faithfully for over a year now. The biggest advantage to using it is that I can actually know how much weight I should lose each week before I get on the scale. If there's enough calorie deficit between my intake and output, I will lose! It's very easy to use and I hope it will help you. I can tell you that I get more compliments now that I did in highschool and that was many years ago for me! I have more energy than I did as a teenager and it helps now that I'm a grandmother. Good luck in college and stay healthy!

Getting a buff beach belly

Thank you guys, I think I'll check out that website. :)

Getting a buff beach belly

What cracks me up is that Ms Timeless probably isn't reading any of this! I'm nearing 30, and I finally feel about 50% as fit as I did in high school when I was training for wrestling :) I still have a small spare tire that you can only see if I'm shirtless. Now, thanks to all of this effort after only 4 months, I have defined muscle everywhere, especially on my legs, and the old six pack is starting to push the fat that's left on my belly into a six figure form I used to relish at the beach. I have what they clinically call 'no time to workout' but somehow I manage to squeeze it in there just barely. I also noticed that I stopped losing weight after 2 months because I was not eating enough! Viddy that. I trimmed my lunch to just a sandwhich and stuck in a 200 calorie cereal bar meal at 10am during work, and suddenly, I was losing weight again. I'm now only losing about a pound every 2 weeks, but I can see that my goal of getting rid of the spare tire is at least on the calendar for sometime this year, so I keep pushing myself. Sometimes I miss a day because I really am f'ing busy, and my fitness still does get the short end of the stick now and then. But I still go right back to it, because I know how good I'll feel when I can say that I got where I'm going. So for all of you who have supposedly no time, hey now, I just gave you a rundown on what I do, and it is working. My wife was a little upset at first with my commandeering of that extra hour, after all, by the time I get home I only have a bit left, but she knows that my being healthy is ultimately good for the whole family, and now she's become my biggest supporter.

Getting a buff beach belly

I feel sorry for Ms. Timeless, who has her family so scheduled that she can't find time for herself. I feel sorry for her kids, and hope that they don't grow up thinking of Mom as just someone who can get them from point A to point B. I hope that she wakes up soon and sees herself as a role model for her kids. Children notice what you value, I've learned from experience, and if they see that you value good health and work to stay in shape, they will probably follow the same path. They need to see that working out doesn't have to mean always being in some kind of organized, competitive sport. It's best that they see you can stay fit by just putting on your shoes and taking a walk, doing a few situps and crunches while dinner cooks, a few leg lifts while you're standing at the kitchen counter, work with some dumbbells while you're watching TV, do a few stretches while you're sitting and waiting for the doctor, etc. Be creative and you'd be surprised at how far you can get.
Like other posters, I found out the hard way that if you don't use it, you will lose it. I used to run 5K's, but let my workout routine slip when I got a sedentary job about two years ago. I hadn't stepped onto a scale for a long time, until I started popping the buttons off of my pants a couple of months ago. I learned that I had packed on yet another 10 pounds with absolutely no effort. It seems to get easier once you're in your late 40s and early 50s. Over the past two months I've managed to take off about 8 of those pounds, simply by cutting out the cookies at work, taking a little time each day to work out, and by walking for 30 minutes 3-5 times per week (depends on the weather, I'm asthmatic and don't have a treadmill at home).
Ms. Timeless, please don't sell yourself short. Take some time for you, you'll be surprised at how much better you will feel.

Getting a buff beach belly

You know, cumulative exercise is also beneficial. However, I'd rather not be a fat student with a full time job. You make time for what you want to. Think outside of the box, and anyone can find time to work out.
I purposely park 2 blocks downhill from where I work. I also take the stairs EVERYWHERE I go. I live on the 4th floor of school. I bring my books to the gym and study on the elliptical. When I need to take a break from writing a paper, I do a few crunches. I do calf raises when watching tv, cooking dinner, or talking on the phone.
In the summer I walk during my lunch break while eating a sandwhich. I bought a treadmill for my living room so that when I'm rotting in front of the Sopranos, I have something to do.
Exercise is not necessarily going to the gym 5 days a week and running your butt off. I babysit for my nieces twice a week... we throw their favorite Barney CD in the stereo and have a dance party- talk about cardio. Wanting to spend quality time with your kids shouldn't be an excuse to not exercise... my favorite memories of being younger are hiking with my parents, sledding in the winter, going on a "leaf hunt" in the fall, playing catch with my dad after dinner in the summer... kids would rather you doing something interactive with them than cozy up in front of the tv together.
My best friend and I also made a pact over the summer- we wouldn't let work or class be an excuse not to go to the gym. We found a 24 hour facility near us, so even if our day doesn't end until 10 or 11pm, we can still go work out- even if we just spend 20 minutes jogging, it's better than doing nothing. Also, we rely on one another. If I feel lazy or like I'd rather take a nap, she drags me kicking and screaming; and I do the same for her. Finding a partner to work out with can increase your liklihood of following through.
If you found the time to comment on this article, or to read other's comments, chances are you have time to do a little exercise.
Getting a buff beach belly

I am 44 and have been working out for years. If you want it, you have to work for it, it doesn't just come to you and it doesn't happen overnight. When you start working out and seeing results, you like those results and you start to feel better about yourself and gain confidence. The people that say they don't have time, don't want to make the time. I am at the gym by 4:30 every morning. I make sure to do lifting and cardio. I shower and head to work. At the end of my work day, I can go home and be with my family.
